One early afternoon I was in the casino coffee bar sipping a glass of fruit juice. I had just arrived, and after I found the only Blackjack table at the exclusive room empty, I decided to waste away my time at the bar while waiting for someone to start a Blackjack game. This coffee bar is located just beside the exclusive room, and when gamblers go in and out of the exclusive room, they always pass by the place. I was the only person in the bar that time, though I always found it before to always have some bystanders. Gamblers who have nothing to do usually take their time in this place.
Then a new found friend of mine arrived. This new friend of mine just lost playing Baccarat at the pit area, and so he decided to take a recess. Since I was alone at the table, I invited him to join me for a chat. As I could not be in this casino often, I always wanted to hear insider stories that took place while I was away, and this friend of mine was chatty enough to share some that he knows.
But his life in the casino was a story in itself. This friend of mine has a business inside - he is a small time loan shark. He has been going to this casino almost every day for already five years. He actually has a nice supervisory job just nearby, and if he is free he goes to the casino to conduct his business. His business was lucrative, though in the five years since, the business has not grown a bit. In fact he was always adding capital to it. The reason was obvious to me - because he was a gambler, and anytime he would make a profit, he would just lose the money to the casino. In fact he told me that his business has deteriorated his lifestyle since he was always adding capital to it. He wished he were not a gambler so his business would not suffer. He named to me some of his non-gambler friends who got rich with the kind of business.
I felt sorry for this friend of mine. I had always I wanted to teach him the insider tricks to be a casino winner, but I guessed he was too wise to listen. Every time I would open up the topic of smart playing, he would not take it seriously - so I did not force it on him. He though he was doing it right, though I was very sure he was dead wrong. I was new to this casino, and nobody, including him, ever thought there was something I could share. If he was willing to give me even an hour of his time, he would have learned the very basic in gambling to get him ahead instead of looking up for another capital.
My most serious problem as a gambling mentor is the fact that most gamblers do not believe they could learn something from someone else. They believe they know already everything there is to be learned and so they continue their losing ways. How wrong the gamblers are. They risk thousands of hard earned money, spend years at casinos, yet they are not willing to spend a few dollars or a few minutes for their education. There is a question you can ask yourself to know whether or not you need education from me: If you win more than you lose, then forget about me, but if you lose more than you win, then you need me. Simple as that.
